Gemini brand tracking starts with a naming problem. A team might say “our Gemini visibility improved” when it actually measured Google Search AI Mode, a custom Gemini API application, or the consumer Gemini app. Those observations concern different experiences and cannot be combined into one trend without explaining the scope.
Use this guide to create a clearly labeled Gemini app panel and, where useful, a separate API panel. The broader LLM brand tracking guide explains how these observations fit a cross-platform program.
Establish the surface boundary
Google Search Central describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as Google Search features. Its AI features documentation should inform a Search measurement program, not stand in as documentation for the Gemini consumer app.
Google also documents grounding with Google Search in the Gemini API. This is an application configuration developers can use. A test of that configuration measures the application you ran; it does not establish that the consumer Gemini app generated the same response or followed the same retrieval path.
Use explicit labels such as “Gemini consumer app, web interface” and “Gemini API, configured grounding test.” Add the observed mode, model if exposed, collection date and time, language, geography, account context, and collection method. If a model is not shown, record “not exposed.” Guessing a model creates false precision that later analysts cannot verify.
Create an app collection protocol
Use a new conversation for each independent run, without prior brand discussion. Record relevant personalization and connected-app settings that can be inspected and controlled. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes account context, personalization, and location-related data; use it to identify conditions your protocol should document.
A fresh conversation should be described as fresh, not perfectly neutral. You may not control every account, location, or service-side influence. If the intended scenario is public web discovery, avoid introducing private documents or connected workplace data into the baseline. A separate internal-assistant study can deliberately test those resources under its own rules.
Repeat every core prompt multiple times using the same protocol. For a manageable pilot, three independent runs per question can reveal whether an outcome varies. This is a practical choice, not a claim that three runs estimate the whole audience. Preserve full answer text and collection status so a failed request is not coded as a successful omission.
Separate discovery from fact checking
Use unbranded discovery prompts to test whether the brand enters an answer unaided. Use brand-named validation prompts to test its description. Both matter, but their denominators and implications differ.
For a fictional company called HarborDesk, an unbranded question might ask which scheduling tools fit a distributed service team. A validation question might ask what implementation constraints HarborDesk has. The first concerns inclusion; the second concerns accuracy after the name is supplied. Do not add the brand name to an unbranded prompt simply to make the answer easier to evaluate.
Predefine the correct reference for each validation claim. Product documentation, published support information, and current policy pages can support an accuracy review. If your own references contradict each other, classify the result as unresolved until the product owner determines the truth.
Inspect links without treating them as a full trace
Google says Gemini Apps sometimes show sources and related links, and that not every answer includes them. Record the links actually visible in each response using Google's guidance on Gemini sources as the relevant product reference.
Open each relevant page and check whether it supports the associated claim. A related link can be useful to the reader without proving the origin of every sentence. Conversely, an answer without visible links does not establish that no retrieval occurred. Keep “no visible source captured” separate from “source collection failed” and from “visible source did not support claim.”
For API tests, preserve the tool configuration and returned evidence fields available in that application. Keep those records separate from screenshots or text captured from the consumer app. A common export format is useful; a common surface label is misleading.
Copy this hypothetical worksheet
This worksheet outlines a possible study; it is not a report of observed Gemini behavior.
| Field | Hypothetical plan |
|---|---|
| Business decision | Does public information explain HarborDesk's implementation constraints? |
| Panel | Unbranded discovery and named validation, reported separately |
| App baseline | Fresh conversation; documented personalization and connected-app conditions |
| Scope | English, India; precise timestamp and observed mode per run |
| Repetition | Three independent runs per core question per collection date |
| Accuracy reference | Approved implementation documentation and named product owner |
| Source code | Visible supporting link, related link with unclear support, no visible link, or capture failure |
| API comparison | Separate optional experiment with its own configuration and results |
| Follow-up | Resolve one verified documentation gap, then retest unchanged questions |
Add the exact prompt, version, exposed model label or unknown, original response reference, and failure reason where relevant. These fields make later interpretation possible even when the interface changes.
Report findings at the right level
For mention rate, divide successful answers mentioning the brand by successful answers in that panel. For competitive share of voice, count each fixed tracked brand no more than once per answer and divide its count by the sum of all tracked brand-answer counts. Show failures separately and do not combine API, app, and Search counts into an unlabeled average.
Investigate a repeated factual error with an AI citation source audit or an AI visibility audit. After a correction, use the same panel and conditions to assess observed change while documenting other possible influences.
