An AI citation source audit traces visible links in captured answers to the passages they actually support. Its output is a verified source register and a short list of editorial decisions. It is not a list of domains assumed to control a platform, and it does not reveal every input used to generate an answer.

This workflow sits within the AI citations and digital PR strategy. Use it before pitching publishers, rewriting pages, or drawing conclusions from a dashboard of cited domains.

Define the sample before opening links

Choose a buyer question group and a collection window. Save the exact prompt, answer, platform, surface, run time, language, and collection settings. Note search use when the interface exposes it, and record unknown settings as unknown. A new chat, an ongoing conversation, and an API call are different conditions; do not silently combine them.

Include successful answers without citations. They are part of the observation set even though they contribute no source rows. Keep failed runs in a separate collection log with their reason and any retry. Without that distinction, a source-heavy subset can look like the whole experience.

OpenAI's search documentation says responses using search may include citations and that the underlying results can be incorrect or outdated. A link is therefore a verification lead, not proof that a sentence is accurate. OpenAI search documentation

Trace claims rather than just domains

Break an answer into material claims. For each visible reference, record the statement beside the link and open the destination. Locate the supporting passage. Classify the support as direct, partial, conflicting, or absent. If a page is inaccessible, record that you could not verify it rather than guessing from its title.

Distinguish a source that defines a category from one that compares vendors or substantiates a factual product detail. A university article explaining procurement cannot be treated as an endorsement of every brand mentioned in the answer. Similarly, a vendor's product page may support its current feature description but is not an independent assessment of quality.

Retain both the displayed URL and the resolved destination. Remove tracking parameters only when they do not change the content, and preserve meaningful language, product, and version paths. Keep redirects and duplicates visible in the raw register; summarize them at page and domain levels later.

Use a claim-level worksheet

Answer ID and prompt group:
Platform, surface, collection date:
Claim text from the captured answer:
Citation label and displayed URL:
Resolved URL and page title:
Publisher and source type:
Page date or revision date, if available:
Supporting passage and section:
Support: direct / partial / conflicting / absent / inaccessible
Brand role: named / compared / recommended / not present
Relationship: owned / independent / sponsored / unknown

Save enough context for another reviewer to reconstruct the judgment. Internal excerpts should be proportionate and access-controlled where appropriate; you do not need to republish full publisher articles to create an audit trail.

Summarize patterns at the right level

Count answers with at least one citation, distinct cited URLs, and recurring source types. State the denominators. If you count a domain once per answer, retain that rule throughout the report; otherwise a long answer with several links to one domain can distort comparisons.

For competitive brand visibility, use the separate AI share of voice convention. Count each fixed tracked brand at most once per answer. Share of voice is the brand's appearances divided by all tracked brand-answer appearances, including its own. It is different from a domain's citation frequency and from the rate of successful answers mentioning a brand.

Imagine a hypothetical set of procurement prompts repeatedly citing a trade association's definition page and several product documentation pages. That pattern suggests two editorial jobs: check whether the definition accurately frames the problem, and ensure relevant product facts have verifiable public evidence. It does not justify asking the association to add an unsupported recommendation.

Turn findings into decisions

Prioritize by buyer relevance, factual severity, recurrence within the sample, and feasibility. A repeated false eligibility claim deserves attention before an occasional missing name in a broad educational answer. Separate actions you control from publisher requests and platform feedback.

Owned-page fixes belong in content optimization or brand entity coverage. Incorrect external facts belong in the correction workflow. A credible evidence gap may justify original research. Publisher prospects should pass the digital PR opportunity review before outreach.

Close the audit with a reviewable backlog

Give each action an owner, evidence link, deadline, and validation method. Recheck a comparable sample after the change and preserve the earlier capture. Report whether the source changed, whether the answer changed, and whether the supporting citation changed as separate observations.

An audit is complete when another person can trace its conclusions to captured answers and checked pages. It has not established global citation rankings or the causal effect of a publisher. Bring that evidence register to a BIU demo when planning the next monitoring cycle.
